52 Workday Prayers: Psalm 2 - Serving the Lord Through Your Work
I will proclaim the LORD’s decree:
He said to me, “You are my son;
today I have become your father.
Ask me,
and I will make the nations your inheritance,
the ends of the earth your possession.
You will break them with a rod of iron
you will dash them to pieces like pottery.”
Therefore, you kings, be wise;
be warned, you rulers of the earth.
Serve the LORD with fear
and celebrate his rule with trembling.
Psalm 2:7-11
Prayer
Lord Jesus Christ, you are indeed the unique Son of God. You are King of kings and Lord j lords. All nations, all institutions, all corporations, all organizations, and all churches ultimately belong to you and exist under your supreme sovereignty.
To you, Lord, belong all things. Indeed, “there’s not a square inch in the whole domain of human existence over which you do not exclaim, ‘Mine!’”* It all belongs to you.
By your grace, Lord, may I serve you with reverent fear in all that I do, whether I work for compensation or as a volunteer, whether I’m a CEO or a brand new intern. No matter my position or salary, my fame or obscurity, may I offer my work to you as worship.
Today, Lord, may I live with you as my King, serving you with faithfulness and joy. Be glorified in my work today. Amen.
Ponder Throughout the Day
Every square inch of your world, including your workplace, belongs to the Lord.
For Further Reflection:
Read all of Psalm 2, paying attention to what the Spirit of God is stirring up in your heart, especially in relationship to your work. Talk with God about what you are thinking and feeling.
* The line in quotation marks is a paraphrase from Abraham Kuyper in his speech opening the Free University in Amsterdam in 1880. You can read an English translation of this speech here.
