Father Judge

My friend Don heard two men discussing Father Mychal Judge, the New York Fire Department chaplain who died in the World Trade Center collapse.

One man said, “Wrong place, wrong time!”

Don jumped in, “No, it was the right place at the right time!”

You see, Father Judge had rushed into the towers to minister to a fallen fireman. The dying firefighter was in his arms when the building came down.

At the chaplain’s funeral, the priest said, “He loved his fire department and all the people in it, and that’s the way it was when he died.”

This is Howard Butt, Jr., of Laity Lodge. Faith, work, and courage are building blocks that make quiet people into heroes. Father Judge, so good and valiant, exemplifies the many that day who gave their lives in the high calling of our daily work.

Greater love has no one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends.
