A Soft Response

The team had a tough quota and great pressure to reach it. Time was short and tension ran high. Then, just before lunch, Carrie lost it. She publicly challenged Dan, the team leader.  She criticized his strategy, griped about the workload…and she walked out.

After lunch, the team reconvened, and everyone braced for fireworks. Carrie did too.  She returned to the table and avoided eye contact.  Dan, however, looked straight at Carrie and said: "You all right?" She nodded yes. "Good," Dan said, "let’s get to work."

This is Howard Butt, Jr., of Laity Lodge.  A harsh response to an offense is like gasoline on a fire. A soft response is known to cool many a hot moment…in the high calling of our daily work.

"Do not judge, and you will not be judged. Do not condemn, and you will not be condemned. Forgive, and you will be forgiven.” (Luke 6:37)
