Wells and Water
Isaac's men then dug another well, but again there was a dispute over it. So Isaac named it Sitnah (which means "hostility").
Genesis 26:21
Wells and water dominate Genesis 26. Isaac and his people kept trying to find reliable sources of water, but this led to conflict with the people who lived in the lands where Isaac and company were sojourning. Finally, the intervention of the local king resolved the conflict over water.
There is something strangely contemporary about the theme of wells and water. Even today, disputes over water are common, and becoming increasingly so as population growth makes limited water supplies more valuable. In the developing world, the combination of scarce water supplies and contaminated water sources leads to conflict, disease, and death. World Vision reports that 3,800 children die each day from diseases associated with poor water and sanitation.
God has called us to be good stewards of his creation, including water. Our commitment to his justice will mean not only that we are careful with the water that he has entrusted to us, but also that we work to see that all people have access to enough clean water. For more information, see the World Vision website.
QUESTIONS FOR REFLECTION: Do you ever think of water as something God cares about? What could you do to be a better steward of God's creation?
PRAYER: God of creation, thank you for the gift of water. Thank you for how easily I can quench my thirst, or wash my clothes, or even water my garden. But I remember today what a precious resource water is and how you have called your people to use it wisely. Help me to do this in my own life. And help your people to do this throughout the world.
Today I pray for the millions of people in this world who don't have adequate water resources. Lord, may they receive what they need to survive. Motivate businesses, agencies, and governments to provide safe water for people.
Bless the efforts of your disciples who are committed to provide water resources for those in need. May more of us join in this effort through our prayers, our work, and our financial support. Amen.
