Compassion With Wisdom

Dr. Grace Terrell's patient called with an unusual problem: her EKG that day had ruined her vision. But wait . . . heart exams don't hurt eyesight.

Suppressing her amusement, Dr. Terrell realized her patient's problem must be caused by anxiety. She prepared to thoroughly investigate. She reviewed the patient's records and was about to telephone her—when the nurse walked into her office, laughing.

The patient had called back to sheepishly confess that when she left the exam room, she had grabbed the wrong eyeglasses!

This is Howard Butt, Jr., of Laity Lodge. Faced with an anxious patient, Dr. Terrell showed compassion and wisdom. She didn't ridicule. She listened, took the complaint seriously, and gave it some time. We too can practice compassion and wisdom every day. It's the high calling of our daily work.

The LORD is gracious and compassionate, slow to anger and rich in love. The LORD is good to all; he has compassion on all he has made.

(Ps. 145:8-9)
