Dr. Brand

Dr. Paul Brand was a medical student in London during the devastating air blitz of World War II. Many young English pilots were badly injured as they bravely defended their homeland.

After multiple surgeries to reconstruct one man's severely burned face, Dr. Brand asked him, “How do you keep going?”

“First,” the man said, “we have no mirrors in the house. Second, when I see a stranger recoil at my face, I turn to my wife and see myself in her eyes.”

This is Howard Butt, Jr., of Laity Lodge. The way we see others is not neutral, but potentially life-giving. To habitually see people as God sees them is a gift to everyone we encounter—in the high calling of our daily work.

God saw all that he had made, and it was very good. And there was evening, and there was morning—the sixth day.
