My friend Earl Palmer once visited a Nimitz-class aircraft carrier. When it came time to go, he boarded a small plane. The young pilot described what their launch by catapult would feel like.
"When you go from zero to one-fifty in three seconds, you'll feel like you are shooting straight into the sky." Earl smiled nervously.
"Then the rate of acceleration slows and you'll feel like you are going to crash into the ocean. But you won't. The plane is still climbing, just not as fast." A few minutes later, Earl understood.
