After three quarters of not meeting team sales quotas, Jim grabbed lunch with David, the company’s rising-star manager. Jim asked David, "How do you do it month after month? You find ingenious fixes to problems that trip up the rest of us, and—well, your team works."

David answered quickly. "It’s the team, not me. I ask for their best ideas, and almost always they know more than I do. Besides, people work harder on the solutions they devise themselves."

This is Howard Butt, Jr., of Laity Lodge. The effective leaders I know listen more than they talk. They know that getting the best out of people comes as you trust the best in them…in the high calling of our daily work.

He sat down, called the twelve disciples over to him, and said, “Whoever wants to be first must take last place and be the servant of everyone else.”  Mark 9:35
