Tim McGuire was editor of the Minneapolis Star Tribune. When he retired, he overheard someone trying to explain what he intended to do next.

A friend said, “Tim’s going to write about spirituality and work.” “Oh,” came a cynical retort, “he’s going to write fiction.”

After many years in my job, I can tell you that faith in the workplace is not fiction. Despite headlines and high-profile stories about workplace greed and corruption, it is faith that gives balance and meaning to the work we do.

This is Howard Butt, Jr., of Laity Lodge. It may be fashionable to be cynical about business, but we know better. And part of our job is to disprove the skeptics. As individuals, as companies, as a nation, we can daily demonstrate the high calling of our daily work.

Be merciful to those who doubt; snatch others from the fire and save them; to others show mercy, mixed with fear—hating even the clothing stained by corrupted flesh. (Jude 22-23)
